All right peeps, I’ve gotta be honest with you — I kind of need to bail on this blog. There are so many green bloggers out there who are so much more willing to sit at a computer after a full day’s work and actually write something meaningful; I’m just not one of them. Out of pure selfishness (which I like to disguise as eco-friendliness), I’ve decided to put a concerted effort into unplugging myself from technology as much as possible. I already stare at a screen for eight hours a day and, to be frank, I don’t think my ramblings are worth the bandwidth.
However, I promised I’d report on my time in Copenhagen, so I’m going to follow through with that. The catch is that I’m writing about these climate talks for the National Post, which means that if I don’t eschew earnestness and embrace irreverence (our paper’s mandate), I could get fired. Well, probably not fired, but it would be useless because my editors wouldn’t print anything I filed. In short: my COP15 diary does not include heartfelt and lengthy interviews with people making a difference; it features quips about the Little Mermaid statue.
If you still want to read them, here’s a link to Monday’s story.
And here’s another link to today’s story.
Finally, here’s the introductory piece I wrote when I arrived on Sunday.
I’ll post the others later this week. Please don’t hate me for ending things on a sarcastic note!

Great work while it lasted… I’ll keep watching this blog on the hopes that you drop a new post every few months **wishes**
awww- well I had a funny feeling… You are a fantastic writer and author and I’m so proud that you’re Canadian!!!
We will miss you Vanessa!!!
What a shame, but it’s fully understandable!
Thank you, Vanessa, for all the useful advice, for your blog and, specially, for the great book! Like Zac said, you did make a difference.
Wish you all the best!
Greetings from far Portugal…
Darn! I only just found the blog a while ago after reading the book. At least it took a while to read all the back entries
All the best Vanessa, I’ve enjoyed your book and blog.
I’ll take your readers!
I am so below being above riding your coat tails. I’ll admit, I was excited to see a new post from my fave Thistle but that era has ended. When I read the book, all of that did seem so long ago given where we both are now. From that night at the Styrofoam party, the extremes we both went through that year to now being happy, healthy, enviro and in love with a couple eco-conscious hotties.
Though I do miss the year we had when we were green dating each other and making soups on a Saturday night.
Meghan
We’ll miss you! Please do keep us updated on any future writing, if possible. All the best, and thanks for a great blog-reading year.
Alas, blogs are born to burn out. The effort to feedback ratio — it’s just not, um, sustainable. Until the next one begins. Thanks much, V!
Why not be honest about the National Post’s mandate and your part in it? The “irreverence” on display in your diary entries from Copenhagen is being used to ridicule the conference. Regardless of your motivations (e.g. we all need to make a living) you are choosing to lend your voice to this cause.
For shame.
Yes, we all need to make a living. And you write with humour and conviction. And you made your own way to see what the world has to say about climate change. To learn and to change.
Best of luck in the future, whatever you do it will be with consideration and clarity. We all adapt and change. Embrace it and au revoir!

It’s been a good ride and a great blog and you’ll be missed and I have your book and <3 Vanessa!
I guess when the posts come 6 weeks apart, even the slow readers get the point. Good-bye and good luck.
[...] Green as a Thistle is going off the “air” after she finishes reporting from Copenhagen. [...]
My timing is excellent. I literally just finished the last page of your book on the bus on the way to work this morning! I’m happy to have found both your blog and your website: it’s a relief to find that everyone goes through the same pains while tring to be “green”. All the best in your next personal challenge!
I’ll miss you Green as a Thistle!
Hey girl!! How sad we are to see you’re closing your blog but how happy we are to have met you! You are always in our thoughts – the whole office got a copy of your book and we all read it! You were mentioned in a local paper for a book review here

Green on sista .. hope you come back and visit us some day!!
Judy and your friends at Cowichan Green Community!
I don’t know if you’ll get this commment. I guess it would depend on how unplugged you are now. But regardless, I’m reading your book “Sleeping Naked is Green” and it’s very inspiring. I’ve always been concerned about the environment, but as a teenager living in a suburb, I didn’t think there was more I could do than recycle. But now I’ve got ideas to make every aspect of my life now green, and how to continue doing that as my situation changes. So thanks, and keep up the good work!
