Also known as “sea cows”, manatees are quite possibly one of my favourite animals. My mom and sister love them, too, and we often adopt them for one another at Christmas through the Save the Manatee Club (co-founded by Jimmy Buffett, apparently). Now, according to this National Geographic video, they might be in less danger of getting plowed over by boats thanks to a new high-pitched beeping device (it would require people paying about $100 to attach the device to their boats, but hey, it’s a start). Give it a watch and try not to coo at the sight of a scuba diver getting his noggin sucked on by an adorable manatee!

I think this is a great idea and hope that the authorities enforce this device on all motorcrafts. The manatee is a very passive animal that needs our protection and support. Thank you for bringing awareness to the dangers that propellers and boating cause for the manatee!! :-}

Oh god. I better not watch it or I’ll start getting all weepy. I love manatees, too.
Anyway, making these alarms required (as part of boat registration) in areas where manatees live would make for a great movement/cause. Anyone in Florida want to take this on?

I fell in love with manatees after living in Florida. I’m sure it wouldn’t take much for Florida boaters to require these devices on their boats. They already have special Save the Manatee license plates (extra money from the sale of the plates goes toward conservation) and lots of boating laws that are designed to help protect manatees.
