I’d like to buy a towel, please (Day 291)…

coyuchi

I’m all for using towels until they’re crusty and threadbare, but eventually there comes a time when you just have to replace them. A couple of my towels, for instance, were passed down to me by my parents a few years ago, and they’d already been using them for another few years. It was starting to feel like I was drying myself off with cardboard.

So I decided to get another towel, but this time made sure it fulfilled all my eco-criteria. It’s no surprise that good old Grassroots came through again with their organic cotton towels made by Coyuchi, the same company that made my bed linens.

As well as being chemical-free, these towels are also unbleached, which means there was no dioxin pollution in the manufacturing process, plus organic cotton lasts twice as long as regular cotton, and apparently gets softer with every wash (we’ll have to see about that, though – Toronto’s water can be pretty hard).

The only downside with this purchase is, a single bath towel sold for $40 plus tax, which is crazy. I mean, in the States that’s like $100 now, right?

If you’re looking for somewhere or someone to pass your retired towels on to, animal shelters can always use them. That’s what I generally do with old towels, after keeping some for rags.

I can’t wait for the day that I don’t cringe when I look at the prices for bedding/bath/clothing that fit my criteria. I feel like my penny pinching side and my green side are in constant war with each other.

The US and Canadian exchange is really close- just a few cents, actually.

Thanks for the animal shelter tip, Ainslie – I was wondering what to do with some of my old towels, and couldn’t think who might want them.

I have one of these bath sheets and two washcloths. They are fantastic and worth every penny!

    Those towels look gorgeous!

Those look gorgeous and organic cotton is great but don’t forget second hand when you need new towels. I am picky about towels and want ones in good condition but I have had great luck getting towels at Value Village. No they don’t match.

Nice dig at the crappy us exchange rate! I couldn’t afford to buy anything last time I went to Canada and it was 1:1.

Get in your currency digs while you can! My in-laws can’t stop making them (they’re Canadian, I’m American) – I guess it’s payback for all those jokes we’ve been making for years!
