Moving from a condo to a house, from living solo to living with others, means that one couch and a tiny IKEA table just isn’t going to cut it furniture-wise. But I don’t want to go out and buy all new stuff, so instead I plan on trawling Craigslist, antique stores and thrift shops for used pieces.
If they’re in good condition, it’s a bonus, but if not I can just whip out the tool kit (or find a nice handyman, preferably one who’s single and cute) to help refurbish them. Often, all it takes is a bit of sanding or recovering and suddenly a 40-year-old chair looks like new.

GREAT IDEA!!!
when my husband and I married, and we were “setting up house” I was the only nearby grandchild with a pick-up truck. As a result, I ended up with lots of “old” stuff – antiques and such that were worn but “FREE” to fill my home. Now, years later, I find that these are the things I treasure most – because they have the energy of my grandmother, grandfather, great aunt, great grandparents, etc. home. Some people would say my style is hodge podge, but you know, this stuff is extremely sturdy, has held up better than anything made of particle board, and really is “RE-USE”.

Don’t forget freecycle.org! I found a lovely and huge wooden desk that I am in te process off sanding back and revarnishing. Once i’ve finished I’ll have a gorgeous desk that looks brand new for the cost of a tin of lacquer and some elbow grease.
But I agree, a single and good looking handyman to help is a very good idea.

Don’t forget to hit up yard sales and estate sales! You can get AMAZING things at some of those. Also, when hotels decide to redecorate, they sell the furniture at super low prices. Hit those up for massive discounts.

Going off the hotel comment… Around here we have a resale store that is strictly stuff from hotels that have redecorated and its super cheap. I got a stylish sturdy and clean sleeper sofa there. If you can find a place like that it’d be a great find.
