Casting my green vote (Day 225)…

Yesterday was election day in Ontario. It was especially exciting (and by that I mean just slightly more exciting than watching my cat barf on the Thanksgiving turkey) as we weren’t just casting a vote for our premier, but a vote for how we wanted to vote. Um, yeah.

To clarify: there was the standard box to be checked for the candidate and party we were voting for, then a second ballot pertaining to the current referendum on whether our province should continue to use the first-past-the-post system (ie. the one with the most votes wins) or a mixed member proportional system (which involves a more complex weighing of votes for candidates as well as for political parties).

So in the spirit of environmental reform, I killed two birds with one stone (to use a rather inappropriate expression), voting for the Green Party of Ontario, then for the MMP electoral process, which would at least give the greenies a fighting chance at some seats in legislature.

I don’t think the Green Party is perfect, by all means, but it’s as close as it gets to my value system — plus, how could I resist when their font is so close to the Thistle’s? Yay, Helvetica!
