Cones not cups (Day 213)…

Thanks to Laura W for her suggestion yesterday, which was pretty much the cutest idea for a green change ever: Eating ice cream in a cone rather than a disposable cup. Granted, I’ve already pledged not to order any takeout food unless it meets all my local/organic criteria and I bring my own containers, but this was just such an original, simple thing to do, I figured I’d write about it anyway.

Of course, if you’re eating ice cream at home, you can just use a regular bowl or try baking some homemade waffle cones. But if you’re walking around on a hot, sunny day and hear the familiar Siren’s call of that little white truck, best to get it in a receptacle you can eat rather than one you throw away (and ask them to skip the paper napkin, too).

    This was one of the first changes I made when I started reducing my plastic waste! I ordered an ice ream sundae to go, thinking only about the paper cup it would be served in and forgetting all about the plastic spoon!

    Now, I’m trying to reduce all my waste, plastic first but also paper, so cones are definitely the zero-waste, not to mention fun and tasty, way to go!

    I love this change!
    I’ve already been doing it for a while.
    I usually make sure the paper napkin is included, though. I’ve worked in similar type of snack places, and you touch all the money and everything. I like to know that the person’s dirty money fingers aren’t touching my ice cream cone. Besides, the paper napkin is recycleable, and I just bring it home in my pocket with me!

    I dont like those extra calories and licking is not the same as slurping.. maybe the cone can go in the compost?

    Not to rain on your ice cream, but how is telling people to “switch” to something the vast majority of people are already doing anything more than an excuse to feel good about their existing habits? Since they were first introduced, ice cream cones have been much more popular than cups.

    If you really want to make a meaningful change, stock your cone with vegan ice cream. Because of the massive waste and greenhouse gas emissions associated with livestock production, a vegan scoop in a cup is far greener than a cow’s-milk scoop in a cone.
