When I casually mentioned a couple posts ago that I’d be interviewing Jake Gyllenhaal, I had no idea there’d be a tidal wave of his fans, mostly from iheartjake.com, rushing to my blog with a million questions for the star.
As it turned out, I happened to be his last interview that day, so after speaking for 15 minutes about his new film Rendition, there was just enough time for me to squeeze in a couple extra questions from the Gyllenhaalics. Here, below, are his replies:
Me: Many of your fans are wondering if you still have Boo, your puggle? They haven’t seen him in a while.
Jake: (After a few seconds pause, then a sigh of what sounds like lament, he looks to the floor and responds) “I don’t have my puggle … I don’t have my puggle.”
Me: Do you ever read anything about yourself on the Internet?
Jake: (Another pause) “Sometimes people send me funny things … I’ll leave it at that.”
Me: Do you know about the Jake in ’08 presidential campaign? It was a MySpace page but it got taken down recently.
Jake: “Wow, no, I don’t.”
Me: I hear you’re really into food — how do you feel about cilantro? Some people love it but other people think it tastes like soap.
Jake: “Oh, I really don’t like cilantro! It’s like the only herb I don’t like.”
Me: It’s a very divisive herb.
Jake: “It is.”
And to answer some other, more general queries: Yes, he’s tall — about six feet; Yes, he’s definitely just as “scrumptious” in person (and a great dresser, unlike his friend and co-star Peter Sarsgaard, who wasn’t wearing any socks at the press conference); and, Yes, he still cycles (he even noticed a little chain mark on my leg and thought it was pretty cool).
Later, when he walked on stage at the press conference, he somehow managed to spot me in the crowd of journalists. Before he sat down, he pointed right at me and gave a little wink, which basically turned me to mush. And what did I do in response? The lamest, most embarrassing thing I possibly could’ve done: I smiled, and gave him the thumbs-up. Horrible. Straight out of Wayne’s World. Biggest regret of my life.
So there you go, guys. Hope that keeps you satisfied for the next little while. Maybe I’ll get to interview him again next year and we can reconnect.

Vanessa, thanks so much for sharing some of the details of your interview with Jake. Our apologies for perhaps overwhelming you with so many Jake questions though, LOL. Jake has finally solved the case as to where Boo has been. I’m sure it would be only natural that Jake would be apprehensive about ALOT of stuff that’s on the net about him. It would have been great to hear alot of his responses from some of the great questions that Jake fans posted in your blog, but we certainly realize and understand that you only have a short amount of time for the interview. Thanks again so much for indulging us Gyllenhaalics!
How cool that he picked you out of the journalists and gave you a wink, must have surely made your day indeed! Good luck that you hopefully get to interview Jake again for the TIFF next year.
Vanessa, THANKS A LOT, YOU DID GRREEEEAT!!! I am chuffed that you actually asked my question about the Puggle:
Here is a question that his online fandom has been batting about for a whole year: Where is his little dog Boo? (We think he gave it away to a friend or something, but don’t tell him that)
AND my question about Jake in 08…. Well the part about it being taken down by MySpace:
Such a darn shame that MySpace took down the page “Jake in 08″, last week, it was gold! Soooo funny….. Maybe can you ask him if he saw it before its demise?
I actually posted to your earlier post at least six times, but using diff aliases each time…. Too bad you did not ask him my question about getting rid of that useless “official” webpage, that is a BIG ISSUE for the Gyllenhaalics, and also, did you by any chance pass on this message I wrote:
Can you please tell Jake that his fans (well most of them) HATE that the paps are all in his face all the time, we wish him peace and happiness always. Tell him that there are millions of people who care for him very much, even if they don’t know him personally, and yeah, if he would come over and say hi to us at Jake Watch, or at Wet Dark and Wild, or at IHJ, that sure would be be nice!
Did you tell him how much his fans admire him??
PS: I don’t think smiling and a thumbs up is horrible in any way! That is a perfect positive response!!
Great job, Vanessa! A smile is ALWAYS good, and a thumbs up is as positive as you can get.
omg omg thank you so much Vanessa you asked all the most important questions!!!
Sorry to hear about Boo.
But your cilantro insights were right on the mark; it is a very divisive herb.
Here’s Jake’s and my love child Wake.

I feel hopelessly old. I’ve never heard of the guy. I think I’ll get my walker out and go watch Wheel of Fortune now.
HI
Thank you so much for sharing the interview. I figured Jake had to get rid of Boo. Maybe he didn’t get along with Atticus, or maybe two dogs were too much for him to take care of.
You did a wonderful job and I think your interaction with him at the press conference was adorable. You should not be embarrassed you gave him the thumbs up. That was not lame at all. I bet he appreciated it. And it was so sweet how he picked you out of the crowd and made sure you got recognition.
take care
Linda
I guess the old coconut oil question slipped through your finger (no pun intended).
Vanessa, you have no idea how impressed I am that you took the time to not only ask him our questions, but write it up for us here. I know this blog is not about your job, per se, and certainly isn’t about Jake, so that was very generous of you.
To the Boo answer, I suggest everyone remember the way Jake likes to keep things mysterious. When I read this, I pictured the same man who sat with an apparently straight face and told someone he likes to go and watch a pig get slaughtered. Is either thing true? Only Jake knows.
Meanwhile, the fact that you asked him about cilantro and he also doesn’t like it has me floating on my own bizarre delusional little cloud of Jake-compatibility. He can safely cook for me any time.

I bet he noticed that you blow dried your hair!
Oops. That link won’t work, because apparently I can’t spell. This one should!

Thanks so much for asking for questions and then asking the questions! And for giving us your impressions of Jake. I’m glad they were positive. And I’m absurdly happy that he doesn’t like cilantro.
Oh, and good luck with that whole TP thing
Wow, thank you!!!! Thank you!!!! Thank you for another glimpse at this Dream Man. He’s sounds as sweet, and flirty, and gorgeous and fun and charming as we all believe he is.
Oh, and try not to feel too bad about the smile and thumbs up. Many of us probably have couldn’t have even formed words when face to face with Jake!!!!! So you did good. Really.
At last somebody with a mind of his own ask the good but sensitive questions outside the usual amorous area. Congratulations from a fellow journalist (Exam 1964)!
The website about the *old* history of the family is owned and webmastered by a US cousin of Jake’s father, not by me.
BTW cilantro is in Europe also called coriander.
H.
Yum. Great picture.
Hello ,
Thank you very much for this beautiful information.
Best regards,
Like what you did. Wishing you a very happy and prosperous new year !
