As an arts reporter, most of my year is spent watching movies, interviewing actors and directors, covering press conferences and then writing about all of the above (I know, it’s a hard life). When the Toronto International Film Festival comes around, I do pretty much the same stuff — it’s just 10 times as much work every day (on a side note, if you have any pressing questions for Jake Gyllenhaal, feel free to post them in the comments section below, as I’ll be interviewing him tomorrow).
It’s not unusual for me to go through the entire memory card of my dictaphone twice and fill up four or five notebooks with my scrawled observations about Rachel Weisz‘s unflattering top, Elijah Wood‘s surprisingly cute and un-hobbit-like demeanor or the wilted salad Chloë Sevigny was eating for lunch.
Unfortunately, I’m not a good note-taker: I write things down that, later, serve no purpose whatsoever to the story I’m trying to tell; I write in a VERY LARGE, MESSY STYLE — my letters would probably have a font size of at least 20; and I rarely use both sides of the page because my feeble mind gets confused at where one interview ends and another begins, and the last thing I want to do is misquote someone.
This uses up a ridiculous amount of paper, though, so from now on I’m going to make a concerted effort to write smaller and use both sides of the page (perhaps with some extra-bold, underlined and highlighted headings like, “These are quotes from your interview with Ken Loach — NOT your interview with Cyndi Lauper”).

Oooooh… Jake Gyllenhall… yummy! Questions for him: Does he have a secret penchant for married women who are a few years older than he? :-O
Seriously, my question will be for you; I want to know if he’s as scrumptious in person or if all the mags airbrush him, too.
Oh, you could ask him if he has any opinions/habits/tips about environmental issues. But only in passing. The other question is more important… hehehe
Awesome. I shared your post with a friend, who is also a Jake fan. Her questions:
“Can I touch you?”
“What’s it like to kiss Heath??”
“No really… please? Just a little cuddle?”
Thanks for the opportunity!
If you will be able to speak properly in his presence perhaps you could ask him
1. Is there a new project/film in negotioations or confirmed?
2. What about the Broadway play next year?
(You lucky girl……….)
Wow…not sure you know what you’ve opened yourself up to here.
I think you’ll take care of the basic Rendition questions (What’s his opinion on the policy of extraordinary rendition, and has making this movie affected his views on it) so I’m going to suggest questions that we Gyllenhaalics would love to have answered. Number one on that list is:
What is his next project? And when will it begin?
Additionally…
Has he accepted a part in the (now-Broadway) play Farragut North?
Does he ever read anything about himself on the internet?
Did he know that there is a small campaign by Gyllenhaalics to have him elected President in 2008, despite his ineligibility on the grounds of age?
What would he do first if he were elected?
What does he think Robert Downey, Jr. meant when he described Jake as “wet, dark and wild?”
(These are from the Barbara Walters in me, I guess)
What does he believe is his worst vice?
He’s a chef. What does he think about cilantro? (there are quite a few people out here to whom it tastes like soap, including me)
Describe his most recent dream.
(And, on the green side)
Why doesn’t he bring his own reusable bags when grocery shopping instead of accepting paper or plastic?
What happened to the (two) Camry hybrid(s) he told the GQ interviewer he was going to buy? We never see him in it.
I’ve pointed other Gyllenhaalics here, by the way. Hope you don’t get overwhelmed.
Cherita
Zen Gyllenhaalism (jakezen.blogspot.com)
ohh you are sooooo lucky!!!! How will you ever be able to speak coherently?? Here is a question that his online fandom has been batting about for a whole year: Where is his little dog Boo? (We think he gave it away to a friend or something, but don’t tell him that)
Questions 2 and 3: same as Carla has proposed: What movie will he be doing next, and is he going to be on Broadway next year?
(1) Will Jake be announcing any new projects shortly? Film/Movies? Theater? A new CD (since we know he can sing and used to be in a band)? Is he opening a restaurant? Where? When? WE MISS HIM AND NEED MORE JAKE!! WE’RE ADDICTED.
(2) Can Jake tell us maybe a few things about himself we don’t know?
(3) I look at Jake in his 20s and am so impressed he hasn’t succumbed to the Hollywood Hellraiser phenomona…What would he tell American youth about living their dreams and living a great life?
(4) What are some of Jake’s new interests?
(5) Jake’s an amazing actor. When he takes on a role, what are some of the methods he’s used to get into–to become–each character? For example, in his role in Rendition, how did he ‘become’ him– overall or in any particular scene? Any any other of his memorable roles?
(6) Jake is extremely well read…. Is there a particular character/role that Jake might really love to take– if it ever came along someday?
Ask him why he cheated on Reese with Jessica Simpson!! (or so i hear from a reputable source) That or what’s his favorite ice cream? haha i dunno.
Can you please ask Jake on behalf of all the Gyllenhaalics who adore him, to get rid of that useless “official website” that is an embarasment and an insult to his online fan base? NOBODY pays any attention to it, it is truly pathetic, probably bcz the person who runs it has more or less abandoned it. It’s a disgrace, and if any website deserves the title of “official” that would be the website IheartJake.
IHJ has a ginormous presence, and Stephanie who takes care of it deserves way more credit that she gets. She posts Jake pics and Jake vids and interviews hot off the press, ALL the time, never misses any, for all the Gyllenhaalics’ benefit. There is no other actors’ fan site that comes close to this one. It truly is a masterpiece and is just as awesome as Jake is himself. Would you please pass this message on to Jake? tia.
Other ‘Rendition’ specific questions —
What is the most important thing that Jake took way from his experience being in ‘Rendition’?
What does he hope audiences of ‘Rendition’ will take away from the movie?
Begin Green -
I discovered your Web site because of your Jake question today — I’m a Diehard Gyllenhaalic as is my 13-year old daughter! Just wanted you to know that Jake brought me here, but now I’ve read through your Being Green Archives and wanted to let you know how inspirational I find them. You know, I assume, that Jake supposedly likes eating healthfully (sometimes organic I’ve heard), staying fit and cycling (which you mention you do), and is concerned about the environment and also striving to be Green like yourself. You should ask him questions along those lines too and let him know about your blog. He should also know that folks have been reminded of the importance of BEING GREEN today by coming over here–driven by our love for him. And that we also are inspired by his causes such as the environment, LiveStrong, and the ACLU. Kudos to you both, and more inspiration for the rest of us to do better.
Thanks,
I don’t want to ask him any personal questions, but I’m very, very much interested in his future plans: what is his next project / movie ? Will he be in that play on Broadway ?
And second: what does he believes about his gyllenhaalics and IHG, does he likes us, is he proud to have ….or are we an annoying presence ?!
Thank you for taking this into consideration and good luck with your interview !!
Whoa! Apparently sticking the words “Jake Gyllenhaal” in your subject line is a fantastic way to up your hit count… haha. Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I’ll definitely be asking him about Rendition because that’s what he’s in town to promote (I saw the film last week… it’s OK… he’s really great in it, of course, and it’ll probably be mentioned come Oscar season, but it didn’t exactly blow my mind). But I do like that cilantro question — it’s such a divisive herb! I personally LOVE cilantro. I can’t get enough of it. I believe you can put it in anything and it magically makes it taste fresher, but then that’s probably why so many people think it tastes like soap…
“Did he know that there is a small campaign by Gyllenhaalics to have him elected President in 2008, despite his ineligibility on the grounds of age?”
Such a darn shame that MySpace took down the page “Jake in 08″, last week, it was gold! Soooo funny….. Maybe can you ask him if he saw it before its demise?
Ask Jake how he feels about the pending birth of his first child!
Find out how he feel about coconut oil…. And whether he’s circumcised or not.
And let me know if you need me to hold your pen cap or anything during the interview. You know me. Always happy to help out where I can. That’s what BFFs are for after all.
No questions about Jake, just a quick comment about your blog. I have to say that reading Green as a Thistle has been incredibly inspirational to me. I’m trying to get my mom to read your site daily too, as she searches for that elusive “greener lifestyle” that she’s having such a hard time maintaining.
It’s writing like this, books like Kingsolver’s “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” and the community between like minded people, whether through the internet, community gardens and co-ops or bookclubs that will make the biggest change. Kudos to you for doing such a wonderful job!
Cat
Perhaps you could ask him what he thinks about his huge French fanclub and the 200.000 comments they wrote about him on this site:
http://bbmlove.bb-fr.com/index.htm
Maybe cilantro-tasting is hereditary, like rolling your tongue? Can he roll his tongue? Or, a la Sheryl Crow, how many squares of TP does he use?
This question really does not have anything to do with his new movie..but I would like to know how Jewish he feels he is..does he embrace the religion at all..or is he a cultural Jew? It may not be the proper time to ask that sort of question…but I am curious…thanks..

As the person responsible for Jake’s faux Presidential campaign, PLEASE ASK THE PRESIDENTIAL QUESTION!!! (Cherita, I love you.) I’m also partially responsible for the bid to get rid of his official site, so that question is gold, too. The people want to know!!
Hi, have a great time interviewing Jake and you’ll probably spend 5minutes talking to him and 4 hours unravelling what he actually meant!!
My 7 year old wants to know: when are you gonna make Bubble Boy 2, HSM2 is already made dude!
My question: Do you intend to finish your studies at University? It seems a waste to have done 2 years and not complete the third year.
I wish you all peace and happiness.
YA TELL JAKE IRIS SAID HI AND THAT I LOVE HIM AND MISS HIM
AND THX FOR THE WEARING THE TIE FOR kELLY AND I LAST YEAR ON DAVE!
cORRECTION: I MEANT TO SAY TELL HIM THX FOR WEARING THE TIE ON DAVE IN THE BEGINING OF THE YEAR ON DAVE
You are so lucky to be in a job where you interview celebs.
I’d like to know what project he might have regretted turning down.
What part would he love to play if he was ever offered?
And what does he think of his fans, does he ever go online once in a while to look at sites like Iheartjake?
Would he ever want to do another project with his sister Maggie?
Thanks and have fun with the interview!
not to beat the subject into the ground, you should ask all the people you interview for the film fest the same green questions. ask them what thing they do each day to better the earth. something like that. it would be interesting what they would say. then you could compile the answers & look at them all together. that’s a larger issue but something really important. it seems to be me, so many people are so influenced by those in the media. they go out & get their hair cut like _____, buy the same clothes as ______, but what about doing something that has substance? maybe it would help?
Can you please tell Jake that his fans (well most of them) HATE that the paps are all in his face all the time, we wish him peace and happiness always. Tell him that there are millions of people who care for him very much, even if they don’t know him personally, and yeah, if he would come over and say hi to us at Jake Watch, or at Wet Dark and Wild, or at IHJ, that sure would be be nice!
I would like you to ask Jake if he REALLY wants to continue his education at Columbia University. I read somewhere that he said he would like to and I want to know if this is true? I might have a chance to meet him there! LOL
Have fan!
Please let Jake know there’re so many people around the world adore and care about Jake,we love him!If there’s some questions I want to know, I’d like to know if he ever think about directing a film himself?Or does he want to write a story and direct it to a film just like what George Cloony has done?
Thanks for giving us this opportunity. I have come to Toronto especially for the Gala and I would like him to know that there are a lot of people out there, who aren’t your stereotypical fan, who have been won over by Jake and adore him.
I would most like to know what Jake plans next and what we might see of him during 2008.
I would also like to know what Jake takes away from a big red carpet event.
I saw Jake this evening and it made every moment of that long flight worthwhile. Thanks. http://www.wetdarkandwild.blogspot.com
Vanessa, thank you for giving us an opportunity to ask Jake some questions! If you can, many Jake fans would be interested in hearing from you, how it was interviewing Jake or anything you would be able to share. Here’s hoping I made it in time for you to see my questions. Thanks again! Here are my questions below for Jake:
1. If you could choose any novel or book from any author to be made into a film, or to even direct or produce yourself, which book/novel would you choose and why?
2. In the film industry genre as a whole, which actors/actresses/producers/directors would you most like to work with in the future?
3. Could you perhaps share with us some of your interests at the moment during some of your down time: such as the music you like (singers/bands), books your reading/like, movies you’ve liked or want to see, and perhaps even some sites that interest you on the net?
4. Is Rendition based or loosely based in any way on the real life case about Canadian engineer Maher Arar, who like the character being portrayed in the film, was subjected to extraordinary rendition? Were you and the makers of Rendition by any chance aware of the similar real life case that happened in Canada?
5. You own a production company called Nine Stories. Do you have any future plans or any projects in the works, to maybe produce your own film(s)? If so, what types of films would you like to produce or work on, and could you maybe give us an idea of a timeline on when it would maybe happen? Speaking as one of your biggest fans, I anxiously await for the day, to have the opportunity to get to see a film produced by you Jake!
6. In your opinion speaking as a talented and accomplished actor, would you say it’s easier or more of a challenge portraying a fictional or real life character on film? Could you maybe elaborate a bit on the differences, difficulty, or ease between the two?
Awrighty now! I took the liberty of condensing all the questions, minus a couple/few of the insulting ones and the one about toilet paper, (how many squares?!? :-O )
So here are all the questions and messages for our dear boy Jake:

Sorry, me again, LOL! Chances are you probably won’t even end up seeing/using these questions but for your Jake interview but, here’s a few more anyway….Thanks again! Good luck!
- Jake, is there any type of role that you would maybe turn down, or feel that you wouldn’t/couldn’t do?
- On a lighter note, Jake, is there a province/place in Canada that you would maybe like to visit or vacation sometime?
- At the moment, who are some of your favorite actors and actresses?
- What film(s) would you like to get to see at the TIFF during your time in Toronto?

No questions for Jak from me! Probably too late anyway. But just on the notebook thing, you’r only meant to write on one side anyway and go through the whole of the book like that. Then when you reach the end you turn it round and go through it the other way, using both sides which has always seemed more logical to me.
Hmmm……
Something that a few of us have wondered is.. what does he lack. So, could you ask him, “What would you say you lack of? A lot of fans percieve you to be perfect, but know you’re not, and would love to hear about some of your flaws.”
And also ask for the Gyllenhaalics and IHJ’s sake, “Jake, do you ever read the things the Gyllenhaalics post at IHeartJake.com?”
And of course, like everyone else.. I’d love to hear about his upcoming movies
Thanks!!
Bah! Here’s one Gyllenhaalic who would NOT “….. love to hear about some of your flaws.” “love” is too strong a word. And yes, he IS perfect, well as perfect, or more perfect than any other person. Sarah, did you put IHJ back on his Wiki page again? You’re the one that takes care of it, right? It keeps getting deleted.
I love your column. The questions I would ask Jake would be:
1) Did he take the role in Rendition partly b’c of his political beliefs?
2) Would he ever consider running for political office some day?
3) What is his favorite book of all time? And does he have a library card? (LOL- I’m a huge library/literacy proponent.)
4) Has he ever heard of “fan fiction” and does he know that there are tons of stories posted on LiveJournal.com and other sites about him and Heath, and about their characters in Brokeback, Jack and Ennis? What does he think about fan fic, if he’s aware of it?
5) Does he ever regret going into acting, i.e. in terms of his loss of privacy and the paparazzi?
6) What would he say is his biggest regret in his life? (He’s only 26, he can’t have many!)
7) If the movie “To Kill A Mockingbird” were to be remade in about ten years, would he like to play the role of Atticus Finch?
8) Does he ever want to play a ‘dark’ role, as his friend Heath Ledger is playing now in The Dark Knight? (Personally, I’ve love to see Jake as a future Batman. That bod in the Batsuit??? Yes!!!! And then Heath could play the Joker again….*sigh* …it would be interesting to see Jake play a bad guy.)
9) Would Jake ever consider doing another movie with Heath, or would it be like trying to recapture the magic? Are they still close friends?
10) What is his guilty pleasure? (Come on, Jake, we all have them!)
That’s enough for now. Have fun at the interview! Try not to drool.
“Sarah, did you put IHJ back on his Wiki page again? You’re the one that takes care of it, right? It keeps getting deleted.
”
Lol? What!? Dude, I’m just a fan…. I don’t post anything on his Wiki Page
Lol. I’m just a member on IHJ. Are you thinking of Ally? or Steph?
