Here in Halifax we have propellor which is a microbrewery. They sell big bottles called Growlers, (1.89L). There is an $8 deposit and then $8 for the beer. You bring back your empty jug and get a refilled one for a mere $8. Good beer apparently and good for the environment too.

We did this for the wedding. We HIGHLY recommend Mill Street. While we did not need them, they offered us biodegradeable "plastic" cups made of corn!

If the economics don't work, recycling efforts won't either.
As our little contribution to make this economics of recycling more appealing, http://LivePaths.com blogs about people and companies that make money selling recycled or reused items, provide green services or help us reduce our dependency on non renewable resources.

When you are planning a party you might consider using "<a>kegulator</a>" which is a (somewhat humorous) site that helps you calculate how much beer, ice and cups you will need to keep your party moving. Also, if you do use a keg and are hoping to get more than one nights use out of it, you should NOT use a hand pump tap (because it pumps the beer out using air, which will spoil the beer pretty quickly) but instead figure out how to rent a CO2 cannister and tap (some micros might supply these for you). Otherwise you will need to drain the keg within a few hours to retain the quality.
Getting the quantity and timing right is important: after all you are not really helping conservation if you leave half a keg of beer to spoil...
