My answer to the question, “If your house was burning and you could only rescue one thing, what would it be?” has always been my photo albums. OK, maybe I’d also pick up my cat, and while I’m at it my Ferragamo pumps and Waterford champagne flutes. Oh, and some champagne.
But the point is: I love photos. At least every month or so, I’ll sit down and flip through my albums as the theme song to Growing Pains plays in my head and I’m reminded of all the great people in my life, not to mention the reason I will never again purchase a pair of overalls.
For a while I had a Polaroid camera because I loved the instantaneous results. Now, I can at least see what the pictures will look like on the LCD screen of my digital camera, and if I want them printed, all it takes is a quick jaunt to FuturePhoto, where I can upload all the images, order which ones I want and have them delivered in 48 hours. It’s only 19 cents per pic and just over $2.00 to get them sent, so there isn’t much financial incentive to wait until I have a full “roll” of photos to print.
However, there is quite a lot of environmental incentive. Now that I’m more aware of all the mail I get and the carbon cost of everything that’s delivered to my front door, I’ve been feeling some guilt whenever I place an order for three photos I drunkenly snapped at some party, which may or may not be blurry and which I’ll probably decide aren’t flattering anyway and throw half of them out.
So from now on, I’m only ordering my photos when I’ve got at least 50 of them ready to go.

Hi, Vanessa! This is my M.O. with photos now, and I must say, as a scrapbooker, it is really creatively hampering. I have to have delicious photos in my little paws in order to feel inspired to scrapbook. So, it’s now been about a year since I’ve done any scrapbooking.
But, I also now don’t have a hundred crappy photos printed with chemicals and paper and other non-renewable resources.
