Maybe babies have it right (Day 40)…

ecover

It’s funny how a lot of these eco-products have claims like “Safe for babies” on them. I mean, at what point do we say to ourselves, “Well, I’m not a baby anymore, so I better start incorporating some more toxins into my lifestyle”? Honestly.

This was the case yet again with Ecover’s laundry detergent, which proclaims it’s “ideal for baby clothes”; I figure, my clothes are basically made from the same materials baby clothes are — except I probably have less powder-blue terrycloth in my closet and they probably don’t own a sequined tube top for last-minute disco parties. But otherwise, it’s all cotton, which means this detergent should be just as ideal for me.

And it is.

It has a nice lemon scent, which is enough to make everything smell fresh without being overpowering, and my clothes seem as clean as they were before (granted, the beaujolais stain on that tube top is still there, but I don’t think anything’s strong enough to get that thing out).

We like our Method stuff, too… I still am amazed we went so long without even questioning the chemical ingredients in our cleaners!

I really dislike my “wet”" dryer sheets from Method… They don’t work! They say you can even use them for more than one load, but even when I start with two new ones, the clothes still come out all static-y. Any suggestions?

“Well, I’m not a baby anymore, so I better start incorporating some more toxins into my lifestyle” Very well said! I’ll be using that quote. Once we had a baby and started thinking about all the toxins in laundry detergent, we switched the whole family over. For Carissa, they have these balls you can put in the dryer to do the same thing as dryer sheets, they’re plastic, but you can use them over and over forever. I haven’t tried them but I’ve heard good reviews. What I always did before we got rid of the dryer in favor of a clothesline, is you just take a small washcloth and pour a little bit, maybe a teaspoon, of liquid fabric softener on it and throw it in the dryer. Works great and that bottle of fabric softener will last for like 100 years using it that way.

  4. you have a sequined tube top?

Carissa, I wish I could help. I haven’t run into that problem, though. Our clothes remain static-free with the Method sheets!

Hey Carissa, check out my post on the Static Eliminator from March — they’re reusable dryer sheets and they work just fine for me! And yes, healthycookie, I have a sequined tube top. It only comes out on special occasions!

Carissa, I am using the plastic balls that Rachel mentioned and I recommend them 100%. The only item of clothing that was a little static-y was a pair of fleece pajama pants – everything else has come out wonderfully. Hope you try them and have as good of luck as I have!

Wow, thanks everyone! I guess I’ll have to find me a plastic ball and/or static eliminator.

  9. You might look into Global Balance Laundry products as well. We just ran a piece on them on our blog. They are great and quite inexpensive more than half the price of Ecover. Their marketing isn’t all that great but the products appear to be.
